After almost two years of adjusting to social distancing and lockdowns, consumers around the world could finally see some signs of return to normalcy, possibly as a result of higher vaccination rates in most countries.
Markets are prepared to welcome the annual Santa Claus rally which traditionally sends stock markets higher in the last 5 trading days in December and first 2 trading days of January. According to The Stock Trader’s Almanac, the S&P 500 has gained an average of 1.3% during the Santa Claus rally since 1950.
Increased holiday spending in the spirit of giving during the Christmas festive period would explain this Santa Claus rally and would give a boost to consumer discretionary stocks such as brick and mortar retailers like Bestbuy, Macys, Home Depot and Costco, and US e-commerce giants like Amazon, Walmart, Etsy and eBay.
Another segment that traditionally receives lifts from the year end holiday season is the food and beverage sector. These two F&B giants are expected to do well – Coca Cola, which offers more than 200 beverage brands from soda, to bottled waters, and juices and Pepsico, which has presence in more than 200 countries around the world, and a range of over 20 brands that that generated more than $1 billion each in annual sales.
According to data released by the US Census Bureau, the jolly year-end shopping spree may have already kick-started with the November Retail Sales growing 18.2% year-over-year. US National Retail Federation (NRF) CEO said that the November figures confirmed that consumers are continuing to spend despite economic headwinds. The NRF also expects demand to remain strong through December as safety protocols and a higher vaccination rate help consumers feel safe while shopping during the holiday season.
